I needed to put a bend into the shifter rod. I couldn't find a bender (on short notice) that had a suitable radius and I don't have tanks for my oxy-acetylene torches. Since I do have a MIG welder, I decided to cut multiple slots in the tube and weld up the kerf to form the bend.
